MORELAND HILLS, Ohio
Structure fire (residence): South Woodland Road
A caller reported waking up to the smell of gas, heavy smoke in the bedroom and flames in the kitchen of their ranch home on Hogsback Hill at 7:33 a.m. Aug. 8.
First responders initially called in surrounding departments and closed off Route 87 westbound and Chagrin River Road northbound.
Everyone got out of the house safely — including two small dogs — as firefighters put out a small fire on the stove.
Firefighters from Pepper Pike (ladder truck) and Beachwood (engine) were released around 8 a.m. and a gas company crew was called off after Orange firefighters shut off the gas line, leaving shortly after as well.

Police and the village Service Department responded on the evening of Aug. 4 to close off the street on a report of a sinkhole developing, possibly from a water main break causing a partial collapse of the roadway.

Disturbance: Jackson Road
Responding to a report of a male outside a home screaming with horns also going off at 2:36 a.m. Aug. 7, police met with a woman who said she’d had a disagreement with a friend. Police said all parties agreed to go home for the night.

In making the arrest, deputies said they did not need assistance and just wanted local police to know that they planned to respond within the hour.
Assist other department: Stansbury Drive
With officers tied up on another call just after 10 p.m. Aug. 4, Solon police asked Moreland Hills to check on a resident reporting that it sounded like someone knocked on the front door — twice so far — with no one there either time.
Moreland Hills checked the premises and spoke with the homeowner, saying they found no signs of anyone currently in the area.
Follow-up investigation: Berkeley Avenue
Police checked at 1:13 p.m. Aug. 5 on a possible suspect in an area hit-skip accident.
Suspicion: Stonewood Drive
A resident reported at 12:24 a.m. Aug. 6 that their dogs had been barking for 15 minutes, requesting an officer check the property. Police did so and reported nothing amiss shortly before 1 a.m.
Personal welfare, squad call: Miles Road
A rescue squad transported a woman, 63 and possibly intoxicated, to Ahuja Medical Center for further evaluation after she called emergency dispatch at 11:22 p.m. Aug. 6 — apparently from her home — and reported she was in a swamp and could not get out of her car.
She later stated she was safe and sound and not in water, but first responders were already en route and thought it best to follow through.
