Three people taken to hospital after ambulance and car crash on Spine Road in Northumberland

Three people have been taken to hospital after an ambulance and a car crashed in Northumberland[1].

Police and paramedics rushed to the southbound lane of the A189 near Cambois[2] shortly after 5am on Saturday morning. Two vehicles, an ambulance and a car, had collided.

One person was transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle[3] for treatment. Two other people were taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital[4] in Cramlington[5], Northumberland.

The southbound carriageway was closed between North Seaton roundabout, near Ashington[7], and Brock Lane at East Sleekburn, for almost seven hours while the emergency services dealt with the incident. It has now reopened to traffic.

Two recovery trucks were sent to the scene to take away the vehicles, which both sustained significant damage.

The ambulance, which was involved in the collision, did not belong to the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS)[8] and, it is understood that, nobody was in the back of the vehicle at the time.

A spokesperson for the NEAS said: “We were called to a road traffic collision on the A189 in Cambois shortly after 5am on 26 August.

“We dispatched a rapid response paramedic, two ambulance crews, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader, and one crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team.

“We transported two patients to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital and one patient to the RVI[9].”

Northumbria Police[10] said they attended after receiving a call about the two vehicle road traffic collision at 5.10am on Saturday.
