Two paramedics hurt after fugitive’s car crashes into ambulance

GRAND RAPIDS, MI -- Two paramedics were treated and released from a hospital after their ambulance was struck by a car driven by a fugitive who earlier fled from police.
Kent County Sheriff’s deputies said the crash happened about 12 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15 at Leonard Street and Scribner Avenue.
Deputies earlier had tried to arrest the driver during a traffic stop at Cedar Street and Clancy Avenue. He was wanted on a felony warrant.
Deputies immediately called off the traffic stop “due to the suspect’s driving.”
When the crash happened a short time later, the man’s car first sideswiped another vehicle and then struck the American Medical Response ambulance. Deputies arrived to find the man attempting to drive away in his damaged vehicle.
They fired a pepperball gun into his car and he then complied with commands to step out of the car. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and then to the Kent County Jail.
Police said the driver of the sideswiped vehicle was not injured.
