1 dead, 46 injured in high school band bus crash in New York

WAWAYANDA, N.Y. – Authorities are investigating after one person died and dozens were injured when a charter bus carrying high school band members crashed on a New York highway Thursday, according to state police.

The crash happened around 1:20 p.m., when the bus rolled down an embankment off the side of Interstate 84 in Wawayanda, New York, about 45 miles northwest of New York City, authorities said. The bus was carrying members of the Farmingdale High School band, who were traveling from Long Island to Greeley, Pennsylvania, to attend a band camp.

One adult died in the crash and 46 people were injured, Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said, NBC 4[1] in New York reports. The crash resulted in “multiple serious injuries,” state police said in a news release[2].

I-84 is expected to be closed for “several hours” and drivers are asked to avoid the area, police said.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul offered condolences to those involved in the crash in a statement shared to social media Thursday. New York State Police and the New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services were onsite to assist local emergency responders.

“I’ve been briefed on the tragic accident in Orange County involving a bus filled with high school students,” Hochul said in a tweet[3].

“Our hearts are with all who are impacted by this horrific situation,” she added.
