Biker fighting for his life after A38 Tyburn Road crash which shut road for hours

A young motorbike rider has been left fighting for his life in a crash which shut a busy Birmingham[1] road for hours. The crash took place on the A38 Tyburn Road in Erdington[2] at around 2pm on Sunday (September 17).

The rider, in his 20s, was on a red Honda motorbike when he was involved in crash that is believed to have only involved his vehicle. Police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service[3] said: “We were called at 1.56pm on Sunday to a road traffic collision involving a motorbike on Tyburn Road, Erdington. One ambulance, two paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic and a passing by Patient Transport Service (PTS) crew attended the scene.

“Upon arrival, we found a man who was the motorcyclist. He was assessed and had sustained life-threatening injuries. He received advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene which continued en route to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he was conveyed for further treatment.”

A witness at the scene said the motorbike rider may have hit the kerb and then crashed his bike with it ‘flipping’ in the air. Officers from West Midlands Police[5] ’s Collision Investigation Unit attended the incident.

Markers could be seen in the road coming across from the far side going into the road. The man’s bike was by the roadside and had been stood up.

Now police are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help them piece together what happened. A spokesperson for the force said: “We're appealing for information after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in Birmingham.

“The rider was discovered with serious injuries on Tyburn Road, just off the Aston Expressway, at around 2pm yesterday (17 September). The man, who is aged in his 20s and was riding a red Honda, was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious condition."
