Driver bailed after fatal crash on M62 near Birchwood

Officers were called to the M62 between Birchwood and Eccles at 12.15am after a collision involving a car and a pedestrian[1].

Emergency services attended and sadly a man in his 30s was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family are being supported through this difficult time by specially trained officers.

Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the man being a pedestrian before he was struck.

A 25-year-old man remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been released on bail whilst enquiries continue.

An investigation has been launched by GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit and enquiries are ongoing.

Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this incident; or may have dashcam footage of the collision or of the pedestrian on the motorway; to make contact Greater Manchester Police.

The M62 between Eccles and Birchwood was closed in both directions while collision investigation work was undertaken. It reopened around 5pm.
