Drunk woman trying to avoid racoons crashes car; drunk man lying in grass squares off against police: Berea police blotter

BEREA, Ohio

Operating a vehicle under the influence: Sprague Road

A Berea woman, 63, was arrested at about 12:30 a.m. Sept. 1 after she drove her Chevrolet Traverse into a parked Nissan Sentra in the parking lot of Blue Grass Gardens, 436 Sprague Road.

A witness said the impact caused the Sentra to hit a Chevrolet Malibu parked in the next space. Both the Sentra and Malibu were unoccupied at the time.

The woman smelled like alcohol. She admitted that she had crashed into the Sentra, but said it was because she was trying to avoid hitting raccoons.

The woman said she had consumed three beers prior to the crash. Her eyes were bloodshot and glassy. She was unsteady on her feet and stumbled several times. She failed field sobriety tests.

Disorderly conduct: North Rocky River Drive & West Bagley Road

A Berea man, 51, was cited at about 7 p.m. Sept. 1 after police found him lying in grass at the corner of North Rocky River and West Bagley.

Someone had called police about the man. When police arrived, they smelled alcohol on him.

He quickly became angry with police. He ripped off his shirt and wanted to fight them. Police calmed the man and took him home.

Disorderly conduct: West Street

A Berea woman, 55, was cited at about 6:30 p.m. Sept. 1 after she was seen walking while intoxicated on West Street.

Someone had called police about the woman. She admitted to police that she had been drinking that day.

The woman was confused when police asked her questions. She was unable to stand up straight, and stumbled to the ground more than once.

Police called the woman’s father, who picked her up and took her home.

Arrest warrant served, resisting police: Seminary Street

A wanted Elyria woman, 38, was arrested at about 10 a.m. Sept. 2 during a traffic stop on Seminary Street.

Police recognized the woman’s Chrysler Town & Country as she drove east on West Bagley Road before turning onto Seminary. On March 9, they had pulled over her car for fictitious license plates.

At the time, the woman -- a self-proclaimed “sovereign citizen” -- had a suspended driver’s license.

The woman was still driving with fake plates Sept. 2. She was also wanted in Berea. After the traffic stop, police told the woman she was wanted and that she was under arrest. They grabbed her right arm, but she pulled away.

The woman, speaking into her phone, told someone: “I got pulled over by the police. He talking about I have a warrant.”

Police eventually were able to place the woman in handcuffs.

Criminal mischief: Stanmary Drive

A Stanmary resident called police Aug. 28 and said someone had tampered with his car, parked outside his house, at about 5 a.m. that day.

The resident’s security video showed two male suspects approaching the car and fidgeting with the gas tank cover. They might have been trying to siphon gas.

They ran away when the home’s motion-detecting lights activated.

Theft: Barrett Road

A pink Townie bicycle with a white basket attached to the front and a custom black seat was stolen between 5 p.m. Aug. 28 and midnight Aug. 29 from a bike rack outside Tower in the Park apartments, 55 Barrett. The bike had been left unlocked.
