A woman drove on three occasions despite having her licence revoked because of her cannabis use – but she claimed she did not know.

Kayleigh Moat, 27, appeared at Lynn Magistrates’ Court last Thursday. She was charged with eight offences, all of which she pleaded guilty to.

They included three counts of driving after having her licence revoked, three of driving without third party insurance, one of exceeding a 40mph speed limit and another of exceeding a 30mph limit.

Crown prosecutor Nicola Lamb told magistrates that those offences were committed on three separate occasions, all of which resulted in Moat being pulled over by the police.

On March 24, a speed camera on the A10 at West Winch clocked her as travelling at 49mph on the 40mph road. Police subsequently checked her driving licence, and found that it had been revoked in August last year.

On May 1 in Mildenhall, Suffolk, she was caught speeding along the 30mph Brandon Road. She was also driving while her licence was revoked on that day.

Police had also witnessed her driving without a licence on May 23 in Feltwell.

However, in court on Thursday, Moat told magistrates she did not know she was not allowed to drive when she had got behind the wheel.

Mitigating, solicitor Charlotte Winchester said: “She was not aware at the time of driving that her licence had been revoked by the DVLA.

“No correspondence has been received. She says she would not have drove if she had known her licence was revoked.”

Miss Winchester said it was only on May 23 – the third time Moat had been pulled over – that she became aware she was not allowed to drive.

“As far as she is aware, there were not any problems with getting post,” she added.

“When she contacted her insurance company, they did not have any issues either.

“She is a lady of previous good character, with no previous convictions against her.”

The solicitor also told the court that Moat’s licence had been revoked after she was pulled over on suspicion of drug-driving last year.

Although no further action was taken at the time, police officers contacted the DVLA about her cannabis use – leading to it being suspended.

Magistrates, led by Terrance Geater, banned Moat, of Mulberry Close in Feltwell, from driving for six months.

They also fined her £120 for her three no insurance charges, and ordered her to pay £50 in legal costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
