Is the M62 closed today? Latest traffic news as accident forces motorway closure between junctions 11 and 12

A man has died after being hit by a car on the M62[1], resulting in a stretch of the motorway being closed in both directions.

Greater Manchester Police said the man died after being struck by the vehicle at about 12.15am BST.

A 25-year-old man, who had remained at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken to custody for further questioning.

Where is the M62 closed?

The M62 between Eccles and Birchwood has been closed in both directions and is expected to remain closed through the morning while officers conduct their investigations, Greater Manchester Police said.

National Highways said the motorway was closed between junctions 11 and 12, with delays of up to 45 minutes.

What diversions are in place?

National Highways is advising people avoid the affected stretch of motorway, and has published diversion advice on its website.

For people travelling eastbound:

  • Leave the M62 east at J11.
  • At M62 J11/A574 roundabout, take the fourth exit onto the M62 west and follow for 4.5km.
  • Leave the M62 west at J10 and follow M6 south for 3.6km.
  • At M6 J21/A57 roundabout, take first exit from first roundabout onto A57 east and follow for 13.2km.
  • At A57/M60 J11 roundabout, take the first exit onto M60 northbound and follow for 1.6km.
  • At M60 J2/M602 J1 interchange, rejoin the M62 eastbound. 

For people travelling westbound:

  • Leave the M62 westbound west and J12 at follow the M60 southbound for 1.5km.
  • At M60 J11/A57 roundabout, take the third exit onto the A57 westbound for 13.9km.
  • At A57/M6 J21 roundabout, take the first exit from the roundabout.
  • At the second roundabout, take the first exit onto the M6 northbound and follow for 5.1km.
  • Leave the M6 northbound at J21A to rejoin the M62 westbound.
