M5 diversion route in full after crash shuts motorway

Diversions are in place following a crash on the M5 in Somerset. The motorway remains closed on the southbound side towards Devon following a collision between junctions 22 and 23.

Two cars and a van are reportedly involved in the crash, which happened at around 9am. Traffic was held on the M5 before police closed the carriageway.

National Highways said: “The M5 in Somerset is closed southbound between J22 near (Burnham-On-Sea) and J23 near (Bridgwater) due to a multi vehicle collision. In addition to the above, the M5 J22 southbound entry slip is also closed. All emergency services are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene providing assistance with traffic management.”

‘Road users are advised to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs’.

  • Exit M5 at J22.
  • Take the first exit on to the A38.
  • Follow the A38 to Dunball roundabout with the junction of the A39.
  • Take the first exit on to the A39.
  • Follow the A39 until it meets the M5 junction 23.
  • Re-join the M5 southbound at junction 23.

Traffic monitoring website Inrix added: “M5 Southbound closed, queueing traffic due to accident, two cars and a van involved between J22 (Burnham-on-sea) and J23 A39 (Bridgwater North). The road is now closed following an accident just after 09:00.”
