M5 fatal crash victim was hit by multiple vehicles during early hours

Police have confirmed a man killed during a crash on the M5 was hit by multiple vehicles. The incident on the Devon-Somerset border led to long delays on the road, which was closed for around 12 hours yesterday (September 6) while investigations were conducted.

In an update released this morning by Devon and Cornwall Police, the force said the man, a pedestrian, who died was a 34-year-old from Northamptonshire. His next of kin has been informed of his death.

The statement also said the man was hit by multiple vehicles, including two heavy goods vehicles, during the incident which was reported at 5.30am on the Bristol-bound carriageway between junctions 27 and 26.

Drivers on the M5 reportedly faced delays of more than an hour and a half while the road closures were in place, with long delays also seen on the A38 through Wellington due to diverting traffic. The M5 southbound was reopened by 10am while the northbound carriage remained closed until 4am.

Officers from the DCP Roads Policing Team have said they would like to thank the public for their patience while the motorway was closed. Following a forensic investigation, police have now launched a witness appeal.

The force said in a statement: “If you witnessed the incident or have any information or dashcam footage that could help with enquiries, please contact police via our website here[2] or by calling 101 quoting log 139 of 06/09/2023.”
