Man and two children die in crash between car and lorry on A5

A man and two children have died following a crash between a car and a lorry on the A5 near Hinckley[1]. Police were called to the A5 Watling Street near Burbage at 4.24pm on Friday afternoon to a report of a crash involving a silver BMW car and a lorry.

West Midlands Ambulance Service, East Midlands Ambulance Service[2] and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service[3] were also called to attend the incident. Leicestershire Police[4] have now confirmed that the driver of the car – a man in his 30s – as well as a nine-year-old boy who was travelling as a passenger in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A woman, in her 30s, and a four-year-old girl who were also travelling as passengers in the car were taken to hospital – but the girl was sadly pronounced dead at the hospital a short time later. The woman currently remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the lorry was not seriously injured in the crash. A road closure remained in place in the area while emergency services attended the scene, with the road being reopened at around 12.25am on Saturday morning.

Officers are continuing their investigation into the crash to establish the full circumstances of the incident. They are appealing for witnesses or those with dashcam footage of the vehicles involved at around the time of the incident to get in touch.
