Motorist injured after flipping car on M5 near Bristol during crash
A person is in hospital after their car flipped during a crash on the M5 this afternoon (September 12). The incident happened at 1.42pm between junctions 19 for Portishead[1] and 20 for Clevedon on the southbound carriageway.
National Highways said all traffic had to be held temporarily while emergency services dealt with the crash. Avon and Somerset Police[2] confirmed a vehicle had overturned during the incident.
Delays of up to 40 minutes were reported on the M5. As of 3.10pm, two lanes have reopened but one remains closed while the vehicle is recovered.
Police confirmed that one person was taken to hospital with minor injuries following the crash. Officers are no longer at the scene.
National Highways said in a tweet at 1.59pm: "Traffic has been stopped on the M5 southbound in Somerset between J19 (Portishead) and J20 (Clevedon) due to an overturned car. Emergency services are in attendance. There's already a 30 minute delay on approach."
It added at 2.31pm: "UPDATE - Lanes one and two are now open on the M5 southbound in Somerset between J19 (Portishead) and J20 (Clevedon). Lane three remains closed for recovery of vehicle involved in a collision. There are currently delays of 30 minutes on approach."
