Police appeal to witnesses after eight injured in serious multi-vehicle collision on A1 southbound

Police officers investigating a serious collision in Northumberland[1] have urged witnesses to come forward.

Northumbria Police[2] received reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic collision on the A1 southbound near Stannington[3] at 12.30pm on Monday.

It was said that a HGV had been travelling on the A1 when it collided with four other vehicles. The reason behind this is yet to be established.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with eight people taken to hospital – six of which have since been discharged with minor injuries. However, two people remain hospitalised with serious injuries – their conditions are described as stable at present.

A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and has since been released on bail as police continue their enquiries. The road was closed for the remainder of the day, re-opening just after midnight on Tuesday.

Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols team have launched an investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the collision, and officers are appealing to members of the public for any information they may have which could assist. Sergeant Steve Armstrong from the force, said: “This collision has left two people in hospital with serious injuries, and we are determined to fully understand what has happened.

“A number of enquiries have been ongoing – but today we would also urge any further witnesses who have not yet spoken to police to get in touch with us. While our investigation is at an early stage, we are also appealing for any key witnesses to come forward – particularly those driving on the A1 north or southbound near Stannington at the time this collision occurred.

“Your information could prove key to the investigation – so I would encourage anyone who thinks they can help to contact us as soon as possible.”

Officers are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who was travelling in the area at the time of the incident, as well as those who may have CCTV or dashcam footage. If you have information, you can contact Northumbria Police by using the ‘Tell Us Something’ page of their website, or call 101, quoting log number NP-20230918-0407.
