Police issue arrest update after pedestrian struck by car and killed on M62
An investigation is continuing following the death of man on the M62[1] with a driver arrested on the scene given bail by police.
The man – aged in his 30s – was struck by a car on the motorway[2] between junction 11 for Eccles and junction 12 for Birchwood just after midnight on Tuesday (September 19). He was tragically pronounced dead on the scene.
A 25-year-old man – who remained at the scene – was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. In an update issued today (September 21), Greater Manchester Police said he has since been released on bail while investigations continue.
Police added that ‘enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances of the man being a pedestrian on the motorway prior to being struck’. No further details on the victim have been released at this stage.
Police said his loved ones are being supported by specialist officers. Anyone who witnessed the crash – which happened at around 12.15am – are now being urged to come forward to GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
Officers particularly want to speak to anyone who has dash cam footage from the time, or who saw a pedestrian in the motorway. Following the incident, the M62 was fully shut for around 16 hours[5] as accident investigation work was carried out.
