Serious M5 motorbike and van crash in Tewkesbury closes motorway

A motorbike and van have been involved in what has been described as a "serious" crash on the M5 in Gloucestershire. The incident happened at around 5.20pm today (September 22) near junction nine for Tewkesbury[1].

Gloucestershire Police[2] said two vehicles were involved in the crash on the northbound carriageway and a closure of the M5 had to be set up[3]. National Highways confirmed the vehicles involved were a van and a motorcycle.

The M5 reopened at around 6.35pm, but long delays remained[4] well into the evening. Police have issued an appeal for witnesses over the crash.

In a statement sent out at around 6.15pm when the M5 was still closed, the force said: "Police are at the scene of a serious collision on the northbound carriageway of the M5 this afternoon (Friday, September 22). Emergency services were called shortly after 5.20pm with a report of a collision between two vehicles just prior to junction 9 for Tewkesbury.

"A closure has been put into place from junction 11 for Cheltenham[5]/Gloucester through to junction nine at Tewkesbury while emergency services remain at the scene. This is expected to remain in place for a number of hours with motorists asked to plan their route in advance and avoid the area.

"Anyone who witnessed the collision but has not yet spoken to police is asked to submit information by completing this online form[6] quoting incident 274 of 22 September."
