Thief flees Ursuline campus with cash after emptying office worker’s wallet: Pepper Pike Police Blotter

PEPPER PIKE, Ohio

Theft from building: Lander Road

Police continued looking for a man wanted in connection with the theft of $220 in cash from the wallet of an Ursuline College employee Sept. 20.

He was reportedly caught on camera sneaking into an unlocked office at the Sister Diana Stano Athletic Center[1] around 1:30 p.m. After someone confronted him inside, he took the money and left the Chardon woman’s wallet behind.

Officers said they also had a lead on the getaway car in which the suspect is believed to have fled.

Car crash, follow-up investigation, search warrant: Northfield Road

Following a Sept. 8 three-car chain reaction collision on Interstate 271 northbound that seriously injured the occupant of the middle car, police executed a search warrant Sept. 13 to pull the “black box” out of the at-fault car.

That vehicle was driven by a Lakewood man. The black box information could help determine how fast his Jeep was going at the time and possibly shed light on other contributing factors.

The Willowick woman in the middle car was listed on the accident report with suspected serious injuries and taken to a local hospital. It was unclear if the driver from Shaker Heights in the front car that was in turn rear-ended was hospitalized as well.

A Moreland Hills police officer, also a member of the regional Accident Investigation Unit (AIU), assisted in recovering the black box from the Jeep for data and evidence that could lead to additional charges.

The Lakewood man was initially cited for failure to maintain an assured clear distance from the car ahead of him.

Drunk driving: Fairmount Boulevard

Police responded to a report of a disabled Ford Escape that had struck a curb near Brainard Road around 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 and found a Beachwood woman, 23, showing signs of possible impairment.

She wound up registering a .16 blood-alcohol content on Breathalyzer -- double the legal limit in Ohio of .08 -- and also faced a charge of failure to control.

Her car was towed from the scene.

Disturbance: Summit Lane

The city prosecutor recommended no charges being drawn on either party following an incident around 5:30 p.m. Sept. 18 between a fighting boyfriend and girlfriend who both claimed their argument had gone beyond a verbal exchange.

Police mediated the situation, with no arrests made at that time and statements forwarded to the law department.

Mutual aid given: Chagrin Boulevard

Pepper Pike police assisted Beachwood officers at the front desk of a hotel there around 4 a.m. Sept. 15, mediating a dispute over the charge for a room.

Traffic stop: Lander Circle

Police stopped a car on the roundabout at 5 p.m. Sept. 17 for registration that expired in July. The driver, a Cleveland Heights man, 59, also had a suspended license. His car was impounded.

School bus complaint, failure to yield, improper passing: Gates Mills Boulevard

The Orange City School District reported that around 10:45 a.m. Sept. 20, a car illegally passed a school bus that had its stop sign out and lights flashing near Cedar Road.

Given the license plate number and description of the car, police contacted the registered owner, a Chagrin Falls woman, and issued a verbal warning.
