Truck driver charged with OVI after crashing into car: Westlake Police Blotter
WESTLAKE, Ohio –
OVI crash: Crocker Road
Officers at 10:20 a.m. on Sept. 1 responded to a crash on Crocker Road in which a large box truck slammed into the rear of a Ford Focus, according to a police press release.
The smaller vehicle appeared to have been pushed about 100 feet, according to a police report. No one reported any injuries. The truck driver appeared confused, and an investigating officer noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage on the man’s breath.
During roadside field sobriety tests, the 34-year-old Columbus truck driver was unable to maintain his balance or step heel to toe. “I can’t do this,” a police report quoted the man as saying.
He refused a breath test. His license was placed under immediate suspension, and he was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to maintain an assured clear distance, and refusing a chemical test following a previous OVI conviction in 2011.
Arrest on a warrant: Clemens Road
Officers at 1 a.m. on Aug. 26 stopped to talk to a group of jaywalkers on Clemens Road when they discovered a 49-year-old Cleveland woman was wanted on a felony warrant for possession of a stolen vehicle. She was turned over to the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Office on the warrant.
Disorderly conduct: Lincoln Road
Officers at 11:50 p.m. on Aug. 29 responded to Lincoln Road regarding a 70-year-old Westlake resident who was lying in a residential yard.
Officers arrested her for disorderly conduct while intoxicated and held her at the jail until a sober friend arrived to pick her up.
Receiving stolen property, trespassing: Detroit Road
A staff member at a Detroit Road elementary school called the police department at 12:15 p.m. on Aug. 30 to report that an unknown man had entered their property and began yelling at children on the playground.
The children moved inside the building, and the man walked away. Officers soon found the man walking on Detroit Road.
He could not provide any rational explanation for why he was yelling at the kids. The 54-year-old Cleveland man also had someone else’s credit card that had been stolen from a Chinese restaurant in Mayfield Heights, according to a police statement.
Officers charged the man with felony receiving stolen property and misdemeanor trespassing. He also had warrants for previous trespassing charges and an OVI out of South Euclid.
Weapons charges: I-90
Officers at 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 31stopped an eastbound vehicle on the highway at Clague Road for a moving violation and discovered signs of drug use in the vehicle, which contained two young children.
Officers found a small amount of suspected marijuana in the vehicle, and the driver had a handgun concealed on his body, according to the police. The 26-year-old Cleveland man was not permitted to carry a gun due to prior criminal convictions. He was arrested and charged with improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a felony, and carrying a concealed weapon. A female passenger and the children were released at the scene.
