Villagers fear ‘notice isn’t being taken’ of nearby stretch of A606 where motorcycle pillion passenger died

Villagers living near the site of a fatal collision fear nothing will be done to improve safety at the site. A woman died following a crash involving a silver Skoda Octavia car and a black Triumph motorcycle on the A606 near Melton on Saturday.

The crash, at the junction with Stapleford Road and Pickwell Road south of Melton, saw a woman in her 50s who had been riding pillion lose her life. Leicestershire Police say the motorcyclist, a man in his 60s, remains in hospital with serious injuries.

Following the fatal crash at the staggered junction, residents in a nearby village believe more action needs to be taken including reducing the 50mph speed limit on the road where the accident happened. Concerned residents in nearby Burton Lazars are worried that ‘notice isn’t being taken’.

One resident from Cross Lane, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “There have been a lot of accidents and notice isn’t being taken and it should be. Maybe there should be some better form of control. It’s very sad.”

Another said: “The speed limit ought to be taken down.” While another resident said: “Nobody ever slows down.”

A spokesman for the highways authority Leicestershire County Council said: “We’re saddened to hear of this accident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the people involved.

“We fully investigate the circumstances of every fatal collision upon receipt of the relevant reports from Leicestershire Police. We do introduce road safety measures where there is an evidenced need and we annually review accident sites, as well as ensure we’re aware of any emerging problem sites.”

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision and are appealing to anyone with any information to make contact. Detective Sergeant Jon Putnam, from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Sadly a woman has lost her life and a man remains in hospital with serious injuries.

“Full support continues to be provided to their families. We are continuing to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are appealing to anyone with any information to come forward.

“Please think back to if you were in the area yesterday afternoon. Did you see the collision or see either of the vehicles travelling beforehand? Do you have any dashcam footage from the area which could help our enquiries?
