BMW driver killed on A38 Sutton Coldfield bypass after crash with tanker lorry

A BMW driver has tragically died in a collision with a tanker on A38 Sutton Coldfield bypass last night. Police said a lorry driver is assisting their inquiries. West Midlands Police[1] closed A38 Sutton Coldfield Bypass in both directions to carry out ‘accident’ investigations.

It happened between the A446 London Road for Bassetts Pole Island and the M6 Toll JT3 for Tamworth[2] and Sutton Coldfield[3] at around 10.30pm on Friday, October 27. A 28-year-old man, who was driving a black BMW 140i car, was pronounced dead at the scene. His 19-year-old male passenger was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Police said a lorry driver is assisting with their inquiries. In a statement, the force told BirminghamLive: “We are investigating after a man, aged 28, has died following a collision in Sutton Coldfield. We were called to A38 Sutton Coldfield Bypass shortly after 10.30pm last night (27 Oct) to a collision involving a tanker lorry and a black BMW 140i car.

“Sadly, the driver of the BMW was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger of the BMW, a 19-year-old man, was taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening. The driver of the lorry is assisting with our enquiries.

Road closures in the area have now been lifted.”

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, from the police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, added: “Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the man who has died and we have a family liaison officer in place to support them. “If you have dashcam or mobile footage or know any information about what happened then please contact us by calling 101 or via LiveChat on our website quoting 5100 of 27/10/23 or by emailing investigators direct at [email protected][5].” Earlier traffic data provider Inrix posted: “A38 Sutton Coldfield Bypass in both directions closed due to accident investigation work between A446 London Road (Bassetts Pole Island) and M6 Toll JT3 ( Tamworth[6]/Sutton Coldfield[7]).

“The road remains closed following a serious accident which happened around 22:30 on the 27th of October.

The M6 Toll exit slip is also closed at JT3.” While a passer-by to the crash posted on X, formerly Twitter, that the crash “looked an awful and very serious accident.”
