Cyclist suffers ‘serious injuries’ as crash shuts North Staffordshire road

A cyclist has been taken to hospital with 'serious injuries' after a crash which shut a North Staffordshire road. Emergency services flooded the A527 between Biddulph[1] and Congleton[2] yesterday following reports of a crash between a car and a cyclist. Residents in the area say the road was shut for a number of hours as police remained at the scene into the night. West Midlands Ambulance Service[3] says the cyclist was being looked after by caring locals prior to the arrival of paramedics.

The collision occurred in the Whitemore area - known locally as 'banana bends' - just before 6pm last night. The ambulance service sent an ambulance, a paramedic officer, and a BASICS emergency doctor to the scene. An ambulance service spokeswoman said: "Upon arrival, we found a cyclist being cared for by bystanders.

He was assessed by ambulance staff and had serious injuries. "He received advanced trauma care from ambulance staff at the scene before being conveyed to the Royal Stoke University Hospital[4] for further treatment. The driver of the car did not require treatment from ambulance staff."

We are awaiting a statement from Staffordshire Police[5].
