Heartbreak as woman killed after week of tragedy on region’s roads
People were heartbroken after a woman was killed, following a week of tragedy on the region's roads.
Police, paramedics and the fire service arrived on Birkenhead Road[1] at its junction with Lee Road in Hoylake[2] just after 1.45pm, on Saturday, October 1 following reports of a crash between a van and a pedestrian[3]. At the scene they found a 72-year-old woman had been hit[4] by a Mercedes Sprinter van.
Merseyside police[5] confirmed on Monday, October 2, that the victim died at the scene. Her next-of-kin has been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.
The driver of the van, a 51-year-old man from the Wirral was arrested and taken into police custody. He has since been interviewed and released under investigation. Following the news of the woman's death, the community expressed their sadness and heartbreak.
Irene Corden said: "So sad heartbreaking for the family."
Kate Powell said: "My thoughts are with this lady and her family, and also to all the emergency services who did their very best to help her."
Another woman said: "Horrendous news for this lady's family. May she rest in peace xx"
A fourth woman said: "So very sad thoughts with her family and friends lot of tragedies this week poor lady xx"
The crash came just one day after the tragic school bus crash on the M53 which killed 15-year-old Jessica Barker and dad-of-two Stephen Shrimpton.
Detectives are appealing for any witnesses, CCTV and dash camera footage which may assist the ongoing investigation in Hoylake.
The junction was closed for hours over the weekend, while Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service's search and rescue team also attended the scene. Detective sergeant Kurt Timpson, lead investigating officer for the MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "My thoughts and those of my team are with the lady’s family who are being supported.
"Despite an arrest having been made in connection with her death, I appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident to please get in touch. An investigation is ongoing and I would ask that if you were in the area at the time, to please review your CCTV or dashcam in case the incident was captured.
"Every piece of information, no matter how small, could help us with our ongoing enquiries. I would also like to thank those that helped at the scene for your kindness. Anyone with information is asked to contact our Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit on (0151) 777 5747, email [email protected][8], or DM @MerPolCC on Twitter quoting reference 23000948676."
