Live updates as ‘all emergency services’ scrambled to ‘serious’ crash on M56

A car crashed into a central reservation on the M56 this morning (October 19) with ‘all emergency services’ scrambled to the scene. Traffic was held on the eastbound carriageway before two lane closures came into force. The incident took place between Junction 8 and Junction 9.

Cheshire Police confirmed that a car collided with the central reservation, before a HGV was then involved in a minor collision with the vehicle. A force statement said: “At 11.30am on Thursday 19 October police were called to reports of a collision on the M56 eastbound between junctions 8 and 9. The collision involves one car, a black Mazda, which had collided with the central reservation.

“A HGV had also been involved in a minor collision with the car. There were no reports of any serious injuries . However, two lanes were blocked while recovery work was undertaken.

The scene was cleared by 1.45pm.” Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed it has sent an engine from Lymm and one from Birchwood to the scene. A spokesperson said: “There has been a two-vehicle collision on the M56.

Crews are currently stabilising one car containing a casualty and the motorway has been closed while the incident is being dealt with. Police and ambulance are en-route.” In a later update, it added: “Firefighters assisted by paramedics have released a casualty from one of the vehicles.”
