Man released on bail attempts carjacking, steals truck in Newmarket: Cops

In a news release issued on Friday, York Regional Police detailed an alleged carjacking, followed by an alleged truck theft that included a police chase by air and the accused allegedly driving into police vehicles before being arrested and charged.

Again, that is.
According to police, the see-it-to-believe-it incident started on Wednesday at about 4 p.m. when the accused walked from the Newmarket courthouse — having just been released on bail for unrelated charges — to McCaffery Rd. and Eagle St. W.
Police were subsequently called to that area for an attempted carjacking.
When officers arrived, they learned that a man had allegedly approached a female in her driveway and demanded the keys to her car. The woman refused and called police immediately.

The accused allegedly left the driveway and found a landscaping truck and trailer down the road.
Police allege he stole the truck and fled the area.
Frontline officers were quick to respond and, along with help from the Air Support Unit, police located the truck nearby. When officers tried to stop the vehicle, police say the truck hit several police vehicles.
The truck came to a stop and nobody was injured.

Play VideoNavjot Singh, 21, of no fixed address, was charged with robbery, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, break-and-enter with intent, theft of motor vehicle over $5,000, flight from peace officer, dangerous operation, two counts of failure to comply with judicial release order, and obstructing a peace officer.
