One dead and three injured after multiple cars crash on M4

One man has died and at least three more people have been severely injured after multiple cars collided on the M4 with one car engulfing in flames. Emergency services were called to the scene at J3 A312 The Parkway in Hayes following the tragic accident in which one man lost his life. Fire[1] services also attended the scene. A short video clip posted to X by a passing driver shows a scene of devastation after the crash.

Pieces of the car are visible including a bumper and wheel, with several piles of debris smoking or on fire. Black smoke can be seen rising from the side of the road where it appears at least one car has ended up. Pieces of the crash barrier are destroyed and a mangled car sits on the hard shoulder on fire, while people can be seen rushing to help.

One person appears to either be helping someone up and patting them to put out flames on their clothing. Another video shows a large number of people gathered near the crash scene as a car is totally engulfed in flames. One person moves towards it with a small fire extinguisher as more people clamber over the central reservation to help.

Three more people were taken to a major trauma centre according to the London ambulance service. The accident is causing severe delays in both directions with the whole road shut. The motorway remains shut between Junctions 3 and 4 Eastbound.

It’s also closed at Junction 3 Westbound with traffic queueing to Junction 2 at Brentford. National Highways has released this information about the diversion route for the M4 closure: “Road users are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol on road signs.

  • Exit the M4 at J4 and take the third exit onto the M4 Heathrow Spur road

  • At the roundabout take the first exit onto the A4 slip road and join the A4 Bath Road.

  • At next roundabout take the first exit onto A312

  • Re-join the M4 at J3

The London ambulance service told MyLondon: “We sent a number of resources to the scene, including three ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic, an incident response officer, a clinical team manager, members of our hazardous area response team and our tactical response unit. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

We treated three patients at the scene before taking them to a major trauma centre. Very sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.” National hIghways told drivers that “If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.
