Six are killed in weekend of crashes on Scottish roads
The victims of a double fatal road crash in the Highlands had still to be identified last night. A male motorcyclist and female driver of a Suzuki jeep died when their
vehicles burst into flames after colliding on the Inverness to Beauly road near Inverness on Saturday. Both drivers were travelling alone.
Police were having to use forensic tests to establish the identities of the man and woman, who were badly burned. A taxi driver died on Saturday night when his cab overturned after a
collision in Saltcoats. Cab driver Mr William Kinnon, 42, of Strathclyde Avenue, Ardrossan, was alone in a Ford Sierra at the time.
A 19-year-old youth has been reported to the procurator-fiscal in connection with the incident. A family friend of Mr Kinnon, who was married with a 10-year-old son,
said: ”We feel numb and shocked.” On Friday night, Anne Woods, 42, Ballochmyle Avenue, Auchinleck, was killed when her car was involved in a collision with two other cars on
the A70 Ayr to Cumnock road. The drivers of the other cars were detained in Ayr Hospital, one of them in a critical condition.
Mr William Burt, 22, of Tower Street, Cumnock, was in intensive care over the weekend. The 23-year-old woman
driver of the other car received minor injuries. A 19-year-old man is in a serious condition in Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital after his car crossed the central reservation on Port
Glasgow Road and collided with another vehicle early on Saturday morning. Mr Paul Sally, 19, of Eastbarmiss Avenue, Port Glasgow, had to be cut
free from the wreckage. The driver of the other car, Morton FC footballer Martin Doak, sustained minor injuries.
Also on Saturday morning, a 21-year-old woman was seriously injured when the car she was travelling in as a front-seat passenger apparently went out of control and hit a guard rail on on the East Kilbride road
near Cathkin Braes. Catherine McQuarrie, of Parkhill Drive, Rutherglen, underwent surgery at the Glasgow Victoria Infrimary.
No-one else was injured in the crash. In Paisley, a 57-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a van on Friday evening.
Mr Thomas Corbett, of Dundonald Road, Paisley, died shortly after being admitted to the Royal Alexandra Hospital. On Saturday evening, 20-year-old Isla McAllister, of Craigholm Road,
Ayr, was killed when she was hit by a lorry on the Ayr to Dalmellington road about half-a-mile south of the entrance to Ayr hospital. A 63-year-old man has been arrested and is expected to appear in court
today after the death of 12-year-old Jaqueline McAnenny who was knocked down in Glasgow on Thursday evening. She was seriously injured and died
the following day in Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
