Woman charged with vehicular homicide in crash that killed passenger in car

AKRON, Ohio — An Akron woman has been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide in connection with a crash that killed a 48-year-old woman[1] last month in the West Akron neighborhood.
Sherrod Marie Oliver, 35, also is charged with three counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving under suspension, reckless operation, and failure to control, according to Akron police. She was arrested Tuesday at a home in the North Hill neighborhood and is being held in the Summit County Jail.
The crash, which claimed the life of Tamika Lee of Akron, occurred at about 10:18 p.m. on Sept. 14 on the 1800 block of Vernon Odom Boulevard near the West Akron neighborhood, police say.
A Pontiac G5, reportedly driven by Oliver, was traveling east on Vernon Odom Boulevard and lost control in a curve at high speed. The Pontiac went off the road momentarily, but Oliver was able to correct before losing control again, police say.
The car slid sideways, hit a tree on the passenger side, then hit another tree head-on, police say. Both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, police say.
Oliver was taken to Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center for treatment.
