Woman still critical after road crash
Mr Kennedy’s partner, 32, who was at the wheel, was taken by helicopter to the Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, where she is stable. Their children, aged 14, five and two, were treated for minor injuries but have since been released.
Mary Gillies, 74, of Claggan, Argyll and Bute, who was a passenger in a Honda CRV that was also involved, died at the scene.
Three women – the driver, 51, and two passengers, aged 49 and 46, were taken to Oban Hospital where the 51-year -old and the 49-year-old were treated for minor injuries and have since been released. The 46-year-old woman is still being treated.
Police Scotland are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or saw the blue Vauxhall Vectra or the blue Honda CRV just before the head-on accident to come forward.
Meanwhile, police are continuing to investigate the death of an elderly couple who were knocked down as they walked to church in a seaside town.
Bob and Rose Simpson were struck by a red Toyota MR2 as they tried to cross the A78 in Largs, North Ayrshire, at the weekend.
Mrs Simpson, 84, died in Glasgow’s Southern General Hospital, where she was airlifted shortly after the accident in which Mr Simpson, 87, died at the scene.
The 34-year-old female driver was unhurt and released from hospital after precautionary checks.
Pictures of the incident show the car’s windscreen smashed in. Mr and Mrs Simpson were said to be devout Catholics and are said to have been walking to St Mary’s Church in the town for mass on Saturday.
Father Eamonn Flynn, the local priest, was alerted by other parishoners and he anointed Mr Simpson before he passed away.
He told a newspaper: “He was lying on the ground and they were going to move him.
“They had already taken Rose to hospital. I anointed him there and then. I said prayers for both of them.”
