2 motorists die from injuries sustained in I-57 crash near Neoga
NEOGA -- Two motorists died from injuries sustained when their car was rear-ended by a semitruck trailer Sunday evening on Interstate 57 near Neoga. The Neoga Fire Protection District[1] reported in a press release that it received notice at 5:27 p.m. of this crash on northbound I-57 at mile marker 173. Emergency medical technicians immediately requested flight crews be called due to the nature of the crash.
Upon arrival, fire crews worked with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and Illinois State Police Troop 9 to shut down the interstate to traffic for what would be an undetermined amount of time. During assessment at scene, emergency responders determined the driver of the semitruck was uninjured. However, one of four motorists in the car succumbed to injuries and the other three were in critical condition.
Flight crews from ARCH Air Medical Service in Effingham[2], Air Evac Lifeteam 28 in Effingham and Air Evac Lifeteam 145 in Mattoon[3] were called to the scene to transport two of the three patients. Upon assessment of the third patient, it was determined this individual was not in a condition to fly. One AirEvac team rode with a Neoga ambulance crew to take the patient to an area hospital.
While on the way, the patient succumbed to injuries. While on scene, one aircraft sucked litter from the ditch into its engine and was grounded until it could be inspected. Airlife 1 from Champaign was called in as a result of this.
Crews cleared the scene at 9:27 p.m. and the interstate remained closed for State Police accident reconstruction. The State Police has advised that the car was rear-ended by the semitruck after the car had been slowing with its hazard lights activated to the edge of the road. "These calls are never easy, and we can never be fully prepared for what we may come up on when arriving on scene," the Neoga press release said. "We appreciate all of the mutual aid from AirEvac, Arch/Air Methods and Airlife.

Methodology
To explore and rank driving experience by state, the study considered 12 metrics across five categories -- congestion, cost, infrastructure, safety, and weather.
Each metric was assigned a specific weight, which was then used to calculate a final ranking score through a weighted average. Assigned weights are expressed below within parentheses for each metric. The state with the lowest final ranking score ranks as the worst place to drive in.
Cost (20%) - Gas prices: This is per gallon for mid-grade gas. Data was collected using CollectAPI's Gas Prices API[7] and was accessed in May 2023. (5%)
- Annual toll costs per vehicle: This is government spending on highways funded by toll revenue per state divided by the number of registered vehicles per state. This data comes from the Federal Highway Administration[8] and is for 2020. (5%) - Annual auto insurance premiums: This is the cheapest full coverage auto insurance options in each state.
Data comes from state insurance departments and Quadrant Information Services and reflects the most recent quotes as of July 2023. (5%) - Annual maintenance costs: Data comes from CarMD[9] and is for 2021. (5%) Congestion (25%)
- Vehicle miles traveled per lane mile (in thousands): This measures how many vehicles are using a particular length of road over a certain period of time, i.e. traffic density. For this metric, for every single mile-long stretch of a lane, cars in these states cover this amount of miles in a year. Data comes from the Federal Highway Administration[10] and is for 2021. - Average commute times: Data is expressed in minutes and comes from the Census Bureau's 2021 one-year American Community Survey[11]. (12.5%) Safety (25%) - Fatal car crashes per 100,000 people: Number of car crash fatalities divided per 100,000 population.
