Calls for more traffic calming measures on Lyndon Road

DRIVERS speeding and losing control of their vehicles has lead to calls for more traffic calming measures to be introduced in Lyndon.

This comes comes following a spate of accidents over the years which residents say have lead to near misses with pedestrians, mirrors being knocked off parked cars and trees hit along Barn Lane. Lyndon Councillors Ade Adeyemo and Kathryn Thomas, Liberal Democrat, alongside Liberal Democrat campaigner Paul McCabe set up the petition calling for measures to be introduced over fears of a fatal accident. According to the trio residents have reported a number of accidents over the years including stolen cars hitting trees.

Coun Adeyemo said earlier in the year Coun Thomas asked the council to carry out an investigation, similar to the one they did on Streetsbrook Road after an incident there, but they since discovered nothing had happened when it was chased up after the second incident. Coun Adeyemo said: “We are conscious that Councillors and several local residents have previously approached the council over the years with no success. “Their requests for traffic calming have been met with various excuses including the fact that certain calming measures would affect buses and emergency vehicles, as well as bin and recycling lorries using Barn Lane.

“The fact that this has been yet again brought to our attention by so many residents, we felt that something had to be done to make the road safer. “One of the best ways to escalate this with the council is by petition. “It means we can demonstrate that there is public demand and make sure that the issue gets as much publicity as possible, which will more likely stir the council into action.”

Coun Adeyemo said: “It is unclear at the moment what form the measures could take, perhaps speed humps or road width narrowing with bollards, but we would be happy for a consultation with the residents of Barn Lane and other local road users to take place. “Something has to be done, there have already been too many accidents and the chances of a fatality are high at some point in the future.” A spokesperson for Solihull Council said: “Council staff have responded promptly to the two accidents on this stretch of road with new warning signs and a Speedvisor sign which displays the speed that drivers are driving.

“They are also carrying out a review of all road traffic collisions that have occurred in Solihull from 2020 – 2022 using confirmed data from the Department for Transport. This will inform the council’s road safety priorities for the next year. “We are aware of the petition that is being prepared and once submitted it will be considered and responded to in line with reporting procedures for petitions.”
