Casualties treated after major crash shuts M62 for two hours
Ambulances rushed out to treat casualties after three-vehicle crash on the M62[1]. The motorway was closed for around two hours following a smash on the westbound carriageway near Rochdale[2]. All lanes were closed at junction 19 for Heywood[3] and Middleton[4], with traffic being diverted away from the area.
Queues tailed back as far as junction 22 for Rishworth Moor, with delays of more than an hour at their peak. Three fire engines were called out to the scene at 5pm today (November 14), alongside police and paramedics. The scene was cleared by 7pm.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 5pm on Tuesday, November 14, three fire engines from Chadderton[7], Rochdale and Whitefield[8] attended a road traffic collision on the M62 westbound between junctions 19 and 20. That involved three vehicles, a van, a pickup truck and a car. "Crews arrived quickly and worked along Greater Manchester Police[9] to make the vehicles and scene safe, where there was steam coming from vehicles radiators but no fire or smoke.
Casualties involved were then transferred to the care of paramedics from North West Ambulance.
Crews were at the scene for around 50 minutes."
