Dog lover slams ‘coward’ driver after Izzy killed in hit-and-run

Dog owner Elizabeth Crawford has been left devastated – after her beloved pug was killed by a hit-and-run driver. Passers-by discovered Izzy had been struck by a car and took her to the vets after she had darted onto Porthill Bank through an open gate in the communal garden at her Porthill home. But her injuries were too severe and Izzy had to be put to sleep just a day before her fifth birthday.

The tragedy unfolded on Monday night. Elizabeth, aged 41, said: “It all happened so fast. The car hit her and drove off.

I went out and a man said ‘your dog has been hit by a car’. He told me a van had chased the driver up Bradwell Lane. READ: Police find two men dead in same Stoke property on same day[1] | Staffordshire Police launched an investigation after finding the two bodies inside the London Road property

Elizabeth added: “We walked in and Izzy had blood everywhere.

Her jaw had snapped and her eye and brain were damaged. They said no surgery in the world could save her. She had to be put down.”

Izzy had previously been rescued by Elizabeth and her 17-year-old daughter. The pair got her when she was two years old. Elizabeth said: “She was a rescue dog from Belfast.

She had been neglected, wasn’t eating, she’d been over-bred.

“How can you hit a dog and go off and leave it? It would have been a different story if they had stopped. But they didn’t, they drove off and left her lying there.

How could they? I think they’re cowards.” StokeonTrentLive has approached Staffordshire Police for a statement regarding the incident.

Anyone who knows the identity of the driver or the car should call the police on 101. A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: “We are appealing for information after a dog sadly died following a collision in Newcastle-under-Lyme. We received a report of a non-stop collision between a vehicle and a dog on Bradwell Lane today (28 November).

“At about 5.20pm, the owner of the dog, a pug, noticed it had got out of the house. She was then told that the dog had been involved in a collision with an unknown vehicle nearby. A member of the public found the injured pug and took it to a nearby vets.

Sadly, nothing could be done to save the dog and it was later euthanised. The vehicle involved in the collision left the area after it happened. “We are keen to speak to anyone with any information which could help us track down the vehicle involved, particularly those with CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage from the area at the time.

“Call us on 101, quoting incident 364 of 28 November, or message us using Live Chat on our website.

To report anonymously, call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
