Driver charged with OVI after running into fire truck on I-90: Westlake Police Blotter

WESTLAKE, Ohio -

OVI crash: I-90

Two crashes involving intoxicated drivers occurred within minutes on the same stretch of I-90.

Officers at 12:30 a.m. on Nov.

12 responded to a crash on I-90 eastbound near Columbia Road in which the driver of a Honda Civic lost control and struck the concrete median.

The highway was dry, and the driver veered across multiple lanes of traffic before striking the median, according to the police department. Officers charged the 31-year-old Cleveland man with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to control, and driving with a prohibited blood-alcohol level. An alcohol breath test indicated his blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit, according to the police department.

While officers were investigating the crash and a tow truck was en route, the Westlake Fire Department blocked off multiple lanes of the interstate with a fire truck.

Despite lots of red, blue, and white flashing lights, a Jeep Patriot did not slow down or yield and crashed into the passenger side of the fire truck.

The driver, a 21-year-old Lorain resident, was removed from his vehicle by firefighters. Officers noted that he slurred his speech and appeared intoxicated. He was taken to the hospital and was charged with OVI and failure to control.

The man refused to submit to a test to determine his alcohol level. Therefore, his license was placed under immediate suspension. The fire truck was taken out of service.

Drug trafficking: Clemens Road

Officers spotted signs of drug use in a vehicle they had stopped for equipment and license plate violations at 12:30 p.m.

A passenger, a 26-year-old Cleveland resident, had a loaded 9 mm handgun in his sweatshirt pocket. Officers recovered more than 60 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 53 pills, suspected heroin, and scales.

The driver was a 24-year-old Cleveland resident.

Officers arrested the driver and his passenger, according to a police press release. Charges for the pair included felony trafficking and possession of drugs.

Scam

A 77-year-old resident at 4:30 p.m. on Nov.

14 reported falling victim to a scam after she received an email claiming she won a £6 million sweepstakes.

The victim said that "not long" before this email, she received a call from a telemarketer trying to sell magazine subscriptions. While she declined to buy a subscription, the telemarketer said she had been entered into a sweepstakes.

The victim was told she had to pay taxes and fees to collect the winnings. The scammers contacted the victim over a couple of months and talked her into providing access to various accounts, as well as gift cards.

She paid several thousand dollars before realizing this was a scam.
