Driver in his 20s dies after collision with lorry on A42
A man has died after the car he was driving colliding with an HGV on the A42[1] this morning. The incident prompted the closure of the southbound carriageway for several hours while investigations took place. The crash happened just before 5am.
A BMW X3 hit a lorry parked in a layby, close to Measham[2]. The BMW driver was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre, in Nottingham, with what were described as serious and life-threatening injuries. In an update this afternoon, Leicestershire Police said the driver, who was in his 20s, had subsequently died.
No other people were injured in the collision. The incident prompted the full closure of the southbound carriageway of the A42 between junction 11 for Appleby Magna and junction 12 for Measham. Drivers were urged to avoid the area for several hours, with long delays caused.
A series of diversions[4] were put in place while Leicestershire Police and National Highways were at the scene. The A42 reopened just after 2pm today. Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
A spokesperson said: “Anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t yet spoken to officers is asked to get in touch.”
Anyone with information surrounding the collision is urged to call Leicestershire Police[5] on 101, quoting incident 68 of November 29.
