Every Premier League points deduction as Liverpool await Man City decision

Last week Everton became just the third club in Premier League[1] history to be deducted points after breaches of Financial Fair Play – raising questions over what punishment Manchester City could face if they too are consigned to a similar fate. Pep Guardiola’s side are currently under investigation for allegedly breaking as many as 115 charges over a nine-year period, in which they won three Premier League titles. One of which was at Liverpool’s[2] expense.

It is claimed that the Etihad side didn’t provide accurate information about their finances during the nine years and therefore spent more freely in the transfer market.

On Friday, Everton[5] were charged by the Premier League after findings from an Independent Commission for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations over three years ending in 2022. After an Independent Commission found the Blues guilty, Sean Dyche’s side were hit with an unprecedented 10-point deduction.

City strongly deny the charges levelled at them from the Premier League. Here, the ECHO takes a look at points deductions that have occurred during the Premier League era.

Middlesbrough – 1996/97

Middlesbrough became the first club in Premier League history to be docked points when they failed to field a team for a fixture in the 1996/97 season against Blackburn Rovers. After a virus swept across the squad in December 1996, Boro were left with just 17 players – with 10 of those being made up of debutants and goalkeepers – and failed to fulfil their fixture against Rovers despite noting the Premier League of their struggles.

In hindsight, the punishment was responsible for the Middlesbrough’s relegation as their three-point deduction contributed to them finishing the Premier League season two points adrift from safety.

Portsmouth – 2009/10

Portsmouth’s financial woes took a turn for the worse in early 2010 when they became the first Premier League club to enter administration. In doing so, Pompey were hit with an automatic nine-point deduction. The deduction would see the South Coast outfit fall 14 points from safety in the Premier League and all but sealed their return to the Championship.

Although they reached the FA Cup[6] final that year, losing 1-0 to Chelsea, they are yet to return to the Premier League since their 2010 relegation.
