Family ‘heartbroken’ as ‘loving grandad’, 85, dies after being ‘hit by a number of vehicles’ on main road

A family has been left ‘heartbroken’ as a ‘loving’ grandad, 85, died after being ‘hit by a number of vehicles’[1] on a main road last Monday evening (November 20). The fatal crash victim, now named publicly as pensioner Douglas Burke, has been remembered by his family in a heartfelt tribute. The 85-year-old tragically died at the scene after he was hit by a number of vehicles on the A50, in High Legh.

Police and paramedics attended the scene[2], near the junction of Swineyard Lane, at around 8.17pm. They found that Mr Burke, a pedestrian, had been hit a number of vehicles, including a red Audi TT Quattro and a red Volkswagen UP. The drivers of the cars were said to have been uninjured.

The location where he was struck is an unlit section of the A50. Paying tribute, his family said: “On Monday 20th November Douglas Burke tragically passed away after being involved in a road traffic accident in Cheshire. “Douglas was enjoying his retirement, travelling around the UK and Europe when not playing golf or meeting with friends.

“He was a loving husband, father, brother, and granddad, and we are all heartbroken by his loss. He will be missed by many people around the world.” Inspector Steve Griffiths, of the force’s Serious and Complex Collission Investigation Unit, said: “This was a collision in which a man has sadly lost his life.

Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.We are now urging anyone who witnessed what happened or has any information to aid our investigation to come forward.”
