‘Fed up’ driver abandons car in middle lane of busy road and ‘walks …

A car[1] has been pictured parked up in the middle lane of one of Birmingham’s busiest roads. The driver who appears to have dumped the white Volkswagen Golf on a key commuter route at rush hour has been asked to “explain why you walked away” by police[2] after causing chaos. It was left in the middle lane of the A38(M) Aston Expressway on the out-of-city carriageway just north of Dartmouth Circus on Tuesday morning.

Officers from the Central Motorway Police Group had to cone off the lane with a statement saying it put their “lives at risk”. It also led to traffic delays in the area. In a post on social media, the Central Motorway Police Group, which covers the West Midlands and Staffordshire forces, expressed its frustration saying that the owner had “made no effort” to call the police.

It wrote on X: “To the owner of this Golf.

We have your car after you left it abandoned in the middle lane of A38M. Please contact us and explain why you walked away and made no effort to call the police. Caused unnecessary congestion and putting own lives at risk standing in middle of a Mway.”

The post has gone viral and viewed thousands of times online with many people commenting on the bizarre situation. Many people commented hoping that the driver was okay while there were also light-hearted responses with one saying: “Probably called for recovery several days ago. Has had to venture out for supplies!” and a similar reply stated: “Probably running late so decided to walk, it’s quicker!”

Another wrote: “Can’t park there mate,” while another joked: “I left one there, could you confirm the registration? Thanks” and a further said: “Airport parking?” A West Midlands Police[4] spokesperson has said they have now spoken to the driver and carrying out an investigation. “We were called to a white Golf which had been abandoned in the middle lane of the outbound tidal flow on Birmingham’s A38M at just after 9am today,” they said, reported ITV[5]. “Officers have since spoken with the driver and we are investigating the circumstances.

All the lanes of the A38M were reopened by about 10am after the Golf was safely recovered.” Police are urging anyone with information to get in touch.”
