Four people hospitalised after two crashes on same stretch of the M4

Four people were taken to hospital after two M4 pile-ups that happened in close succession. A total of six cars crashed on Wednesday, November 29 along the same stretch of westbound motorway. The collisions happened at around 4.50pm[1] between Junction 36 A4061 (Bridgend[2] / Sarn service area) and Junction 37 A4229 (Pyle/ Porthcawl[3]) in an area with roadworks.

Traffic monitoring service Inrix said at the time: “There are two accidents in the same stretch, one of which involves four cars and the other involves two cars.” A Welsh Ambulance Service spokeswoman has now said: “We were called yesterday at 4.50pm to reports of a road traffic collision on the M4[4], between junction 36 and 37. We sent five emergency ambulances and our hazardous area response team to the scene.

Four people were transported to Princess of Wales Hospital for further treatment.” Two lanes were closed well into the evening and there were major delays before the disruption cleared at around 10pm. We understand there was also a crash in almost the same roadworks area at around 5.30pm on Monday, though this was a minor accident that the ambulance service did not attend.

A Welsh Government[5] spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incidents and continue to work with our agents and emergency services.

There are currently no plans to adjust the traffic management in the area.”
