Horror Wiltshire crash ‘crushed hopes and dreams’ of elderly woman

An elderly woman who suffered life-changing injuries in a car crash in Wiltshire[1] said the collision “crushed all our hopes and dreams”. A man has been given an 18-month driving ban following the four-vehicle crash on July 15 last year. Scott Hudson, 57, of Whitton Croft Road, Bradford, was driving a Ford Mondeo north on the A350 at East Knoyle[2] when he crashed with the rear of a vehicle in front of him, shunting it into the path of a Volkswagen Transporter.

The VW Transporter then collided with another vehicle, causing the passenger of the VW to sustain serious injuries to her arm which became trapped between her vehicle and the road surface. She was airlifted to hospital[3], and fortunately avoided amputation but has undergone significant surgeries since the incident. In a victim impact statement supplied to the court, the woman who is aged in her 60s from Dudley, said the crash “crippled our future plans”.

She said: “Having survived the confines of Covid, 2022 was to be our year of liberation and our brand new campervan was an integral part of our future plans,” she said. “The accident crushed all our hopes and dreams – we lost money spent on tickets for music festivals and pre booked camping for the summer. The accident brought back even harder mental and physical restrictions than we had enduring during COVID.

“The accident crippled our future plans, we have lost a year so far, healthy years that are incredibly previous in retirement. I will forever be reminded of the accident from the scars I now carry for the rest of my life.” Hudson pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by driving and was sentenced at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on Friday (November 24).

He was given an 18 month community order to complete 300 hours of unpaid work, an 18 month driving disqualification and ordered to pay GBP85 Crown Prosecution Service costs, and a GBP114 victim surcharge.
