Huge Tesco lorry gets stuck on tiny lane in North Devon village
A special rescue tow truck had to be called in to pull the Tesco lorry out of its predicament It was a case of SatNav nightmare or not reading the signs for one supermarket lorry driver after it got stuck in a tiny village trying to bypass a major North Devon closed road. Residents in the village of Ashford, just off the A361, and about halfway between Braunton and Barnstaple[1] in North Devon, were left scratching their heads in wonder how this could have happened when a 33-tonne articulated lorry from Tesco[2] drove through and ended up in a right pickle.
The huge lorry, complete with the supermarket branding and its famous strapline “every little helps” had driven off the A361 which connects the two larger towns in the hope of finding a detour after the major A-road was closed this morning (Sunday November 19) following a serious crash[3]. Resident David York Moore said the mishap had left locals bemused and entertained but also wondering how it had happened when there is a sign at the bottom of the turn off from the A361 saying the road is not suitable for coaches or long vehicles. He said: “I got woken at 5.30am this morning by blue lights from police cars so that lorry must have got stuck around that time.
I don’t know if it was a SatNav error or if the driver missed the sign.
I know it was dark but the sign warning that the road through the village is not suitable for coaches and long vehicles is fairly obvious.”
