Locked Up: The criminals justice caught up with in October and what happened to them
October was another busy month for the courts in Wales with 75 criminals sent to jail for some of the most serious crimes. Here is our monthly round-up of the criminals who have been locked up. They include a police officer jailed for life for psychologically manipulating young children into sexually abusing themselves on Snapchat, while a man who stabbed his vulnerable friend 70 times in what was described as a "brutal and frenzied" murder was also jailed for life.
Members of an organised crime gang also received hefty sentences for the kidnap, torture and blackmail of a man for a GBP100,000 ransom. Once again, several men who attacked their partners or former partners also feature. They include Colin Broadbent who subjected his long-term partner to a brutal beating[1] after accusing her of being unfaithful during a family holiday.
And abusive bully[2] Ceri Llewellyn threw a plate and a pint glass at his partner before punching her and slapping her in the face. You can get more story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here[3].
Here are the criminals and the crimes they committed:
Lewis Edwards
(Image: South Wales Police)The serving police officer who psychologically manipulated children into sexually abusing themselves on Snapchat was handed a life sentence. E[6]dwards was in contact with more than 200 children on the social media platform. Cardiff[7] Crown Court heard he manipulated, bullied, threatened and exploited his victims - forcing them to send him indecent videos of themselves naked and abusing themselves as they sobbed and begged him to stop. The 24-year-old, who had 4,500 indecent images of children, later admitted 160 counts of child sexual abuse and blackmail - but still refused to show up for his sentencing hearing.
Paul Jenkins
(Image: South Wales Police)He stabbed his vulnerable friend 70 times in a "brutal and frenzied" murder[8]. Jenkins attacked the frail victim in his own home, repeatedly stabbing him to the face and chest with two kitchen knives. He then walked into a nearby pub and told the landlord that he "liked to drink his boyfriend's blood".
Swansea Crown Court[9] heard the victim of the murderous attack was 61-year-old David Green, a "kind and gentle" loner who lived in sheltered accommodation in Swansea city centre and who had been befriend by his killer in a local pub. The court heard 39-year-old Jenkins had a history of violent and aggressive behaviour, and his mother had described him as having a "Jekyll and Hyde" character which alternated between being nice and volatile. Kidnap and torture gang
(Top left to right) Fortune Lawson, Arnold Fumumeya, David Assadpour (Middle left to right) Alexis Mutesa, Gideon Lawson, Micaiah Marley (Bottom left to right) Denis Delishaj, Ahmed Omar, Stephen Isaac (Image: South Wales Police)A Cardiff thug ran a brutal and highly organised crime gang that kidnapped, imprisoned, tortured and blackmailed a man for a GBP100,000 ransom.
In scenes reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino film, the masked members of the gang used weapons including guns, knives, and an "attack dog" along with techniques such as waterboarding to terrify and torment their victim. Fortune Lawson, and a gang of criminal associates he recruited from London[10], abducted their victim in Cardiff[11]. After torturing him in a flat, they took him to a safehouse in Hertfordshire while negotiations were conducted for cash in return for the man's life.
It wasn't the first time Lawson, who goes by the street name Mills or Millz, and a gang of his thugs had abducted and tortured a man. At the time of the Cardiff incident he was being investigated by police in London for kidnapping and torturing another man - including pouring boiling water over him - to get cash. Elliot Lucas
(Image: South Wales Police)The drink-driver ignored the pleas and screams of his passengers to stop "showing off"[12] before crashing - causing his car to burst into flames with one of the occupants trapped inside.
Dramatic footage showed police officers and the fire brigade attempting to rescue the young woman as the flames became higher and higher. The 20-year-old was more than twice the legal drink-drive limit when he crashed his Fiat Punto on the A4232 in Cardiff[13] on September 1 last year. There were six people in the car at the time of the collision travelling between Llantwit Major[14] and Cardiff city centre.
Craig McKenzie
The big-spending property developer[15] with a GBP250,000 watch and flash BMW was exposed as a drugs boss. Craig McKenzie supplied a heroin, cocaine and cannabis network stretching from northern England to Wales. The 41-year-old enjoyed a lavish lifestyle which to outward appearances he funded through his property business Teflon Holdings.
Despite only having a declared income of around GBP33,000 in 2021, he wore a GBP250,000 Richard Mille watch and drove a new BMW X5 and VW Tiguan R-Line. When National Crime Agency (NCA) officers raided his house they found GBP128,000 worth of designer goods and clothing as well as GBP33,000 in cash.

(Image: South Wales Police)He subjected his long-term partner to a brutal beating[19] after accusing her of being unfaithful during a family holiday, a court has heard. Broadbent set about the woman with his fists and then a vacuum cleaner extension pipe leaving her with a broken wrist and covered in cuts and bruises.
The 54-year-old's advocate told Swansea Crown Court[20] that he could not really explain how something that started as an argument had ended in the way it had. Sending the defendant to prison a judge told him he had carried out an "appalling and prolonged" assault on his partner of many years. Marcus Bounds
He smashed up a GBP300,000 Rolls-Royce with a shovel[21] while he was drunk and wandering the streets.
Bounds smashed every window on the exclusive SUV causing more than GBP110,000 worth of damage - though he cannot remember anything about the incident due to his level of intoxication. At the time of carrying out what a judge called the "wanton and spiteful" damage, Bounds was on a suspended prison sentence for being part of a gang of car thieves. Sending the father-of-four to prison, the judge said he had no doubt that "envy" had played a part in the defendant's decision to attack the prestigious and expensive vehicle.
Shawn Martin
(Image: Tarian Regional Cyber Crime Unit)He was found with around GBP50,000 worth of cannabis[22] and running a "production line" from his bedroom in Cardiff[23]. Martin was discovered in his bedroom surrounded by the drug when police entered his home earlier this year. Martin, 27, of Canton in Cardiff, was investigated as part of an intelligence-led operation by Tarian regional organised crime unit (ROCU) made up of South Wales Police[24], Gwent Police[25], and Dyfed-Powys Police police officers and staff with partners in the UK Border Force.
Michell Chapman
(Image: Gwent Police)She was under the influence of cocaine when she led police on a chase through Newport[26] city centre. Dashcam footage showed her driving on the wrong side of the road and reaching speeds of 60mph in a 30mph zone.[27] The 52-year-old was first seen by police in Chepstow Road at around 11.45pm on March 10 and they began following her vehicle. An officer turned on his blue lights in an attempt to stop the defendant, but she continued to drive away at speed.
A sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court[28] heard the chase lasted up to eight minutes as Chapman performed dangerous manoeuvres including driving on the wrong side of the road, through a red light and driving over speed bumps at 50mph. Elis Hughes
(Image: South Wales Police)The serial shoplifter[29] took more than GBP1,400 worth of items on a three-month spree including fake tan and prosecco. The thefts were fuelled by the defendant's addiction to drugs.
The 32-year-old, of Cardiff[30], carried out more than 20 thefts between May and July this year. He also took a woman's bank card after breaking into a car. A sentencing hearing at Newport[31] Crown Court heard the defendant targeted a number of stores across Cardiff including Boots, Home Bargains, Tesco and the Co-op.
The value of the products stolen came to around GBP1,400. Ceri Llewellyn
(Image: South Wales Police)The abusive bully[32] threw a plate and a pint glass at his partner before punching her and slapping her in the face. He effectively locked her in the kitchen and she was forced to escape through the kitchen window.
Llewellyn, 31, of Tonypandy[33], was in a relationship with his victim for four years before the assault which took place at their home on July 30. There was an argument after the defendant had asked her to cook him sausages and accused her of having an attitude. Gazmir Baja
(Image: South Wales Police)Found living and working in a Welsh cannabis farm, he had returned to the UK having previously been deported.
It is not known how or when Baja re-entered the UK having first been ordered to leave in 2015 following a conviction for burglary. Baja has now been found living in the UK illegally on three occasions but the 27-year-old said he wished to go back home to Albania. A judge said such a return was "inevitable".
Read his sentencing here.[34] Ellis Shaw
(Image: South Wales Police)He had sex with a schoolgirl in a graveyard and filmed the activity on his phone. Shaw then tried to pretend the video footage was not of the child and attempted to "blame" a former partner.
Cardiff Crown Court heard the 22-year-old met his victim on the messaging app Snapchat and had "groomed" her by playing the part of a "big brother". Sending the defendant to prison a judge said sentencing guidelines existed to protect children from themselves and from people who "use them for sex". Read the sentencing here.[35][36]
Christopher Sullivan
(Image: Gwent Police)The dealer began selling heroin and crack cocaine[37] after he lost his job in Lidl and had to repay a debt after his wages were overpaid. Officers found the illegal substances at his home and more than GBP3,000 in cash. A drugs warrant was executed at the home of Sullivan, 34, in Newport[38] on August 24 when police forced entry into the property.
They found the defendant and another inside and Sullivan confirmed he was the sole occupant. Aaran Sargeant
(Image: Gwent Police)The drug dealer agreed to store more than a kilo of cocaine worth up to GBP44,000 at the home he shared with his elderly mother[39]. He was also found in possession of up to GBP4,000 worth of cannabis.
Sargeant, 29, was raided by police at his Blackwood[40] home on June 23 when only his mother was present. During the search, officers recovered a clear bag containing an unknown white substance. David Rodgers
(Image: South Wales Police)The drug dealer sold cocaine to a 17-year-old boy[41] on two occasions and was raided by police who found amphetamine and cannabis.
He continued to deal drugs after being placed on bail by police. Rodgers, 51, was first raided by police at his Maesteg[42] home on December 1, 2020, at around 8.40am where a number of items were recovered including illegal substances, mobile phones, large quantities of cash, and drug paraphernalia. A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court[43] heard 340g of amphetamine, worth between GBP1,880 and GBP3,760, was discovered along with cannabis and GBP2,575 in cash.
Sion Thomas
(Image: North Wales Police)The "monster" who sexually abused two young girls caused one of his victims to attempt to take her own life. His second victim was told she had "dreamt" about the abuse and it did not happen. Thomas, 43, of Bangor, initially denied the incidents, which involved him exposing his penis, simulating sex, and penetrating his second victim with his fingers.
Both of the girls said they came forward to protect children from the defendant whom they described as a "monster" and a "predator". Read his sentencing here.[44][45] Malcolm Hitchings and William Hayward
(Image: South Wales Police)Stolen cars worth GBP75,000 were taken to a "chop shop" where the vehicles were stripped of their parts to be sold on.
The parts were discovered at a unit on an industrial estate. Hitchings, 37, and Hayward, 36, were found in possession of the car parts in Pontypridd on June 22 after police intelligence linked stolen cars to a unit at the Old Coach Works in Berw Road. There is no suggestion the defendants stole the vehicles, which were delivered to what was dubbed a "chop shop".
Read their sentencing here.[46][47] Carl Dudley
(Image: South Wales Police)The burglar stole an electronic bike worth GBP900[48] after its owner had left it in the warehouse where he worked. The thief was later identified on CCTV by police.

(Image: Gwent Police)The child rapist lied about his age to a 16-year-old girl he was in a relationship with and went so far as to stage a bogus 18th birthday celebration.
He breached a court order when he stayed at her home where her two younger brothers were living with the girl's family having no knowledge of his sexual offences. Summers, 30, of Chepstow[50], was convicted of raping a 14-year-old girl in 2014, and having penetrative sexual activity with a girl under 16, for which he was sentenced to six and a half years imprisonment. He was also convicted of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
Martin Thomas
(Image: South Wales Police)A man has lost the use of a hand after suffering a horror glassing injury in an assault in a busy pub. The victim suffered severed tendons in his wrist in the incident and had to undergo a six-hour operation to repair them. He has been left unable to work.
The man who inflicted the injury, steelworker Thomas, was located by police a short distance away from the Swansea[51] city centre bar still wearing blood-stained clothes. He claimed he had been acting in self-defence. Sending the defendant to prison[52] a judge said he had been "out of control" and "spoiling for trouble" when he attacked a group of men following a confrontation earlier in the evening. Nicola Hexter
(Image: South Wales Police)The mother caught trying to smuggle drugs into prison[53] said she had been forced to act as a mule after threats were made against her inmate son,.
A sniffer dog detected the contraband being carried by Hexter under her clothing along with five sim cards for mobile phones. The defendant's barrister said Hexter's actions in trying to get the drugs into prison were not a determined attempt to disrupt life behind bars but were "a desperate and scared mother seeking to protect her child at all costs". Martin Whitworth
(Image: South Wales Police)He torched a pile of his partner's clothes[54] after he became jealous and accused her of flirting with a pub bouncer.
Whitworth collected hundreds of pounds' worth of the woman's clothing from the house and set fire to them in the garden after a row on a night out which had been arranged to try to rekindle their romance. Luke Davies

Craig Roach
(Image: South Wales Police)The driver smashed through a police roadblock[56] as officers were dealing with a fatal car crash on a busy dual carriageway.
Intoxicated Roach had to be dragged from his vehicle at the point of a Taser to be arrested, and then pretended to have a seizure before shouting threats at the officers. Roach had a distressed passenger in his car at the time - a former girlfriend who he is banned from contacting due to a restraining order. Daryl Rees
(Image: Gwent Police)He threw a vulnerable pensioner with dementia to the ground[57] then lied to the police that his victim had been trying to break into his car.

(Image: South Wales Police)The "cowardly bully" strangled his partner and threatened to kill her[61] during a terrifying assault at her cousin's house.
He went on to bite her on the cheek and punched her so hard it cut her lip. Dickerson, 22, was told by his partner's father, "don't be rough with her" at a family event, before he carried out a horrific attack upon her. He went on to assault her in Swansea[62] city centre after a night out, during which he shoved her into a wall and kicked her in the ribs when she fell to the floor.

He was confronted by six members of a paedophile hunting group who attended his home. Tudor, 42, formerly of Connah's Quay, Flintshire[74], made contact with an account on the social media platform Scout in July last year, who told the defendant her name was OIivia, she was 14 years old and was from Flint.
He initially questioned her why she was on the platform if she was under 18, but continued to speak to her on WhatsApp. Christopher Brophy

Swales could not explain why he attacked his victim but he accepted he had not been taking his medication for paranoid schizophrenia at the time. Cardiff Crown Court[114] heard the victim was left covered in blood and with a collapsed lung and knife wounds to his head, face, neck, shoulder, arms, chest, abdomen, legs and hands as a result of the attack in his own home. The victim later walked to hospital and underwent two blood transfusions while receiving treatment for his stab wounds. The 25-year-old stabbed his victim Jhaid Uddin outside the Starburst Amusement Arcade in Newport city centre on April 23 in a "revenge attack" after a feud between the pair. The shocking assault was captured on CCTV with Mr Uddin ambushed by the defendant who had arrived at the scene on his bike armed with a knife.
