Lorry driver in hospital after ‘serious crash’ with bridge in Audlem
A lorry driver is in hospital after his HGV collided with a bridge in Audlem. Police described the collision, which happened on the A525 Whitchurch Road around 10.17pm last night, as ‘serious’. The HGV collided with the narrow bridge over the River Weaver to the east of the village.
The HGV then went over the embankment, according to Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters, police and ambulance crews raced to the scene. The 62-year-old driver was released from the cab by firefighters, who then passed him into the care with paramedics.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Firefighters attended a call to a heavy goods vehicle that had collided with a bridge and gone over the embankment. “One casualty was released from the vehicle and left in the care of the ambulance service. Crews were in attendance for one and a half hours.”
A spokesperson for Cheshire Police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses and video footage following a serious collision in Audlem. At around 10.17pm on Monday 20 November police were called to reports of a collision on the A525, Whitchurch Road in Audlem. “Police, fire and ambulance attended the scene and on arrival they found that a HGV had collided with the bridge over the River Weaver.
Firefighters made the vehicle safe and released the driver from the cab, he was then passed to the care of paramedics. “The man, a 62-year-old from Staffordshire, was taken to Leighton Hospital where he remains at this time. Enquiries in relation to the collision are ongoing and anyone with any information or video footage which may aid the investigation is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101, or visit www.cheshire.police.uk/tell-us , quoting IML 1695775.”
