M40 shut after lorry carrying dustbin truck overturns near Banbury

Four lanes remain closed on a stretch of the M40 in Oxfordshire after a lorry overturned across both carriageways. The vehicle crashed through the central reservation between junctions 11 and 10 near Banbury at about 16:30 GMT on Wednesday. The low-loader, which was carrying a dustbin lorry, has been cleared but repairs to the central reservation are continuing.

One lane southbound and one lane northbound are currently open. National Highways said about 100m (328ft) of barrier was damaged. Four of six lanes remain closed.

A spokesman said: "For the safety of those both working to repair the central barrier as well as those travelling past the scene it has been necessary to close lanes on both carriageways." Thames Valley Police said no-one was injured and no other vehicles were involved. National Highways said it hoped the motorway would reopen fully later on Thursday once the repairs had been completed.

Motorists are being urged to allow extra travelling time, find an alternative route or delay their journey.
