M5 closed after 150 litres of diesel spilt across road

A stretch of the M5 near Bristol will be closed this evening (November 20) for emergency repair work. A HGV ruptured a fuel tank on the northbound carriageway earlier today which resulted in around 150 litres of diesel having spilled across the road. The repair work[1] began at 6.30pm and is taking place between junction 16 for Almondsbury and junction 15 for the M4.

National Highways said that the M5 will be closed between junction 17 for Cribbs Causeway and junction 14 for Falfield as a result. Motorists have been urged to leave extra time for their journeys amid the closure. Drivers heading northbound will be diverted via junction 22 of the M4.

National Highways South West said in an update on X (formerly known as Twitter[4] ): “A full repair of the #M5 north distributor road between J16 (#Almondsbury) and J15 (#M4) will be carried out from 18:30 this evening. To facilitate this, the #M5 will be closed from J17 (#CribbsCauseway) to J14 (#Falfield).” They added: “National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead, allow extra time and to use the M49 at junction 18A for westbound M4 journeys and to rejoin the M5 northbound from M4 junction 22.”
