M5 near Bromsgrove reopens after crash which killed driver

A man in his 40s has died after the serious crash which had closed the M5 northbound in Worcestershire overnight. The man was confirmed dead at the scene of a crash between a van and HGV at J4A (M42), northbound on the M5, at 8.15pm yesterday (Monday). The road has remained closed for several hours while police investigated the scene and recovery operations were underway.

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "All lanes have now reopened on the M5 northbound within J4A (M42) following the collision which occurred yesterday evening. "There is still approximately two miles of congestion on approach. Please allow extra time for the remaining delays to clear."

The man in his 40s was the driver of the van. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "Upon arrival, we found a man who was the driver of the van. "He was assessed and was in a critical condition.

He received advanced life support from ambulance staff at the scene. "Unfortunately, it became clear that nothing more could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene." Two ambulances, a paramedic officer, a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic, two BASICS emergency doctors, and the Midland Air Ambulance Critical Care Car attended the scene.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "We were called to a two-vehicle collision involving a lorry and a van on the M5 northbound between junction 4A to junction 4 around 8.30pm yesterday evening (Monday 27 November). "Sadly, a man in his 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene. Next of kin have been informed."

Three Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service crews - two from Bromsgrove and one from Redditch Fire Stations - were also at the scene.

Sixty minutes worth of traffic had built up on the M5, which had caused slow-moving traffic on the A38 in Bromsgrove as well as delays in parts of Wychbold and Droitwich.
