M6 to remain shut for ‘several hours’ after serious crash between two HGVs and car

A stretch of the M6 is set to remain closed for ‘several hours’ this afternoon after a serious crash. The northbound stretch of the motorway near junction 23 at Haydock has been fully closed after the crash between two HGVs and a car.[1] Traffic is also being temporarily held on the southbound side. An air ambulance has landed on the scene.

Drivers have been urged to avoid the area while emergency services respond.

A diversion route has been put in place, with the closure expected to remain throughout the afternoon for collision investigation work and recovery. The extent of any injuries has not yet been confirmed.

A statement on the National Highways website said: “The M6 in Greater Manchester is closed northbound between J22 (Winwick) & J23 (Haydock Island) due to a serious road traffic collision involving 2 Heavy Goods Vehicles and a car. “North West Motorway Police Group, emergency services and Air Ambulance are in attendance and are being assisted by National Highways Traffic Officers. The southbound carriageway is blocked while the Air Ambulance attends.

“Traffic within the northbound closure is being turned around from the rear. Motorists are advised to wait until instructed to turn. “The closure is expected to remain in place for several hours for collision investigation, recovery and clear-up work.”

North West Motorway Police said: “We currently have the M6 closed in both directions from junction 22 to 23 and 23 to 22. We are dealing with a serious incident so please bear with us. “Trapped traffic will be released as soon as its safe to do so.

Please find an alternative route if possible.” Merseyside Police have been contacted for further information. Try MEN Premium for FREE by clicking here[4] for no ads, fun puzzles and brilliant new features.
