Man charged over death at slapping therapy workshop

A man has been charged after the death of a woman attending a slapping therapy workshop. Danielle Carr-Gomm, 71, died at Cleeve House in Seend, Wiltshire, on 20 October 2016. Hongchi Xiao, 60, of Cloudbreak in California, has now been charged with manslaughter by gross negligence, after being extradited back to the UK.

He is due to appear at Salisbury Magistrates' Court on Friday. Ms Carr-Gomm, from Lewes in East Sussex, attended the slapping therapy workshop at the country hotel to help her diabetes, her family said. The workshop is understood to involve paida lajin therapy, which sees patients being slapped or slapping themselves repeatedly.

A warrant for Mr Xiao's arrest was issued in October 2019. He was arrested after returning to the United Kingdom from Australia on an extradition warrant and was taken to Gablecross custody in Swindon where he was charged, Wiltshire Police said. Follow BBC West on Facebook, X and Instagram.
