Man faces several charges following fatal motorcycle crash in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Charges against a man accused of killing a motorcyclist in a September crash in Grand Rapids were announced Tuesday, according to the Grand Rapids Police Department. Casey Wynsma, 25, has been charged with: operating while intoxicated causing death, reckless driving causing death, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident (when at fault) resulting in death. Each of these felony charges carry a maximum sentence of 15 years.

On September 18, 2023, Wynsma was traveling southbound on Alpine Avenue NW when he crashed into motorcyclist Gregory Vanocker, 59, who was traveling on Leonard Street.[1]

"I hope these charges bring some measure of closure to Gregory's loved ones," GRPD Chief Eric Winstrom said in a statement. "I don't know how many times it needs to be said: impaired driving has tragic consequences for individuals, their families, and our community.

If you have been drinking or using drugs, do not get behind the wheel."
