Markethill crash: Ciara McElvanna funeral details released

The funeral service for a mum of four who died following a collision in Co Armagh[1] will take place this weekend. Ciara McElvanna was travelling home from a night out at Dundalk racecourse when the minibus which she was travelling in was involved in a collision at around 1:20am on Saturday morning. Ciara had been travelling with a group of friends who had been celebrating the 40th birthday of Patrick Grimley who was also killed in the tragedy.

Patrick’s wife Ciera remains in a critical condition in hospital. Ciara McElvanna, who worked as a nurse, died peacefully at the Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday. She is survived by her huband, GAA star Kevin McElvanna, her children Niamh, Claire, Dara, and Aoife, her parents Roisin and John and her siblings.

Ciara’s remains will be reposing at her late residence 69 Kilcreevy Road, Madden, Co Armagh BT60 3LY until removal on Saturday 11th November 2023 at 10am for Requiem Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, Madden at 11am with burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery. Her body will be waked from 4pm until 11pm today, on Friday from 11am until 11pm and on Saturday morning the house will be private for family and close friends.

The family have asked for family flowers only, with donations if desired to Clark Clinic – Children’s Heartbeat Trust or Air Ambulance NI. Police are continuing to investigate the crash. A PSNI[4] spokesperson said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland can confirm a woman has sadly died following a four-vehicle road traffic collision in Markethill on Saturday morning, 4th November.

“Ciara McElvanna, who was 44, and from the Armagh area, was taken to hospital for treatment to her injuries, where she passed away on Wednesday 8th November. “The collision occurred on the Gosford Road at approximately 1.20am. Two men and one woman remain in hospital at this time receiving medical treatment.

“A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing. Officers would appeal to anyone with any information or who may have dash-cam or mobile phone footage available to contact them at the Collision Investigation Unit at Sprucefield on 101, quoting reference number 104 04/11/23.”
