Massive Tesco lorry gets stuck in tiny West Country village

A special rescue tow truck had to be called in to pull the Tesco lorry out of its predicament It’s every lorry driver’s worst nightmare. Heading into the heart of the West Country[1] and getting stuck in a narrow village lane.

The driver had been looking for a detour after a main A-road[2] was closed in North Devon following a crash on Sunday morning (November 19). But the route they chose could hardly have been worse. Residents in the village of Ashford, just off the A361, and about halfway between Braunton and Barnstaple in North Devon, were perplexed at the pickle the driver of a 33-tonne articulated lorry from Tesco got themselves into, reports DevonLive[3].

Resident David York Moore said the mishap had left locals bemused and entertained but also wondering how it had happened when there is a sign at the bottom of the turn off from the A361 saying the road is not suitable for coaches or long vehicles. He said: “I got woken at 5.30am this morning by blue lights from police cars so that lorry must have got stuck around that time. I don’t know if it was a SatNav error or if the driver missed the sign.

I know it was dark but the sign warning that the road through the village is not suitable for coaches and long vehicles is fairly obvious.”
